Boy Killed by School Bus

MONROE, La. -- Louisiana State Police late Monday were investigating an apparent school bus accident that killed a 5-year-old boy from the Union Parish town of Downsville.

Sgt. Floyd McElroy said the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. as the bus was bringing children home from class.

The bus driver, Catherine Roberson, an employee with the Union Parish School Board, had unloaded some students when the child's older brother crossed the street.

When the younger child went to cross the road, the bus driver did not notice and hit the boy, killing him instantly, McElroy said.

Police did not immediately release the name of the victim.

McElroy said the incident appears to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.
