Police: Brogue Man's
Speed Caused Bus Crash
April 23, 2007
A Brogue man is being
cited for speeding after his Chevrolet Cobalt collided head on with a
school bus full of children Friday in Chanceford Township, police said.
The accident occurred at 7:05 a.m. Friday when Derick Hoke, 23, of
Brogue, lost control of the Cobalt he was driving on Muddy Creek Forks
Road near Flaharty Road in Chanceford Township. The Cobalt skidded
across two lanes and crashed head on into an International School Bus,
police said.
Hoke lost control of
the car because he was speeding as he crested a hill, according to state
police records.
Twenty-two Red Lion
Area junior and senior high students were on the bus, and although some
complained of soreness, none had serious injuries, said Frank Herron,
assistant superintendent of the Red Lion Area School District.
"We had six students
who complained about some minor injuries -- about shoulder pain, neck
soreness and that kind of thing," Herron said.
All students were
checked out by emergency medical technicians at the scene of the
accident. Some were picked up by a parent, and others were taken to
school by bus, Herron said. Students were checked again by a school
nurse once they arrived at school, and some chose to leave school for
the day.
"Our care is for our
students," Herron said.
Police said the driver
of the bus was not injured, but Hoke suffered an injured right leg and
hip. His Cobalt was totaled, and the school bus had some front-end
damage, police said.
