SCHOOL BUS CRASH REPORTS 2007

Child Dies When Struck by School Bus
March 22, 2007

(Eramosa Twp, Ont)A five year old girl has died as the result of a school bus accident on the 4th line of Eramosa Township. The accident which took the girl's life occurred today (Thursday March 22nd, 2007) at 4:07 pm on the 4th line just south of just south of Wellington Road 124 (northwest of Rockwood).

Initial investigation has revealed that a Dennys School Bus was dropping off students from Rockwood Centennial Public School along its designated route. The bus stopped to drop off the victim, Ashlynne Jamie RAYNER 5-years-old of Eramosa Township, Ontario and her sibling Mackenzie (brother), at their grandmother's residence. Both exited the bus and began to cross the roadway in front of the bus.

The victim was next seen along the driver' side of the bus where she had fallen near the rear tires. The bus then pulled away and ran over the victim. The Coroner, Dr. D. Paquette, attended the scene. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim was transported to Hamilton General Hospital where an autopsy will be performed on March 23rd, 2007.

None of the 18 children on the bus at the time of the collision was injured. They were transferred to another school bus and transported back to Rockwood Centennial Public School where crisis counselling was provided and parents were able to pick up their children. Grief counsellors will be at the school again today (23Mar07) to assist students.

Victim Services Wellington was called to the scene to provide support to the victim's family, paramedics, firefighters and the bus driver, Robert OSTRANDER 50-years-old of Guelph, Ontario.

Members of the Western Region O.P.P. Traffic Management Unit, the County of Wellington O.P.P. Traffic Management Unit and the Ministry of Transport are all investigating.

The roadway was closed for a few hours but was re-opened during the evening. The investigation is continuing.
