SCHOOL BUS CRASH REPORTS 2007

Scores of School Children Injured in Bus Accident
February 21, 2007

About 160 school children have been seriously injured in a bus accident at Phakade between Mt. Ayliff and Kokstad. Tsepo Machea, the provincial Arrive Alive spokesperson says the brakes apparently failed, causing the driver to lose control and it overturned. The bus is part of the new programme set up by the department of education to provide rural learners with adequate transport.

Machea says while one of ambulances was transporting the injured to a local hospital, it overturned allegedly due to high speed.

Machea says the bus was recently declared unroadworthy and has been forced off the road but the owner decided to bring it back without taking it for service. Police say they are investigating both accidents.
