REPORTS 2007
Several Children Injured in School Bus
Crash
May 7, 2007
A crash between two school buses sent 22
children and a driver to hospitals Monday morning, but all were released
within several hours, school officials said.
Police said the accident happened about 9
a.m. when one bus stopped to pick up students and was struck from behind
by the second bus.
The elementary age children, some on
backboards, were taken to four hospitals, along with one of the drivers.
Injuries are believed to have included
bruises and scratches, but no broken bones, said Wayne Holliday, the
school district's business administrator.
Both drivers, as required, have been
tested for alcohol and drugs, he said, but the results were not
available on Monday.
The driver of the second bus, Barbara
Medina of Jamesburg, was treated at the Old Bridge Division of Raritan
Bay Medical Center.
No citations have been issued since the
investigation into the crash is continuing, Detective Sgt. Lawrence J.
Linke said.
The remainder of the students on the
buses, about 40 children, were taken to the Brookside Elementary School.
School nurses and other district personnel assessed the students' health
and emotions, Superintendent of Schools Ralph Ferrie said.
The second bus had a damaged radiator and
had to be towed, Holliday said.
The buses were taking children ages 5
through 12 to the Barclay Brook School, which handles grads K-3, and the
Brookside Schools, which is for grades 4-6.
