(STNG) BOLINGBROOK Six middle school students were taken to hospitals with minor injuries after an accident involving a school bus and a van in southwest suburban Bolingbrook on Wednesday afternoon.

About 1:44 p.m. Wednesday, Bolingbrook police and fire units responded to an accident at the intersection of Route 53 and I-55, according to a release from Bolingbrook police. A 2006 blue Ford E-250 van was southbound on Route 53 making a left turn onto northbound I-55 when it struck a 2003 yellow International school bus traveling northbound on Route 53, the release said.

The vehicles collided, causing damage to the driver's side of the bus and front-end of the van. Six Valley View Community Unit School District 365U students, ages 13-14 from Bolingbrook, were aboard the school bus, and all were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville for treatment of minor injuries and precautionary measures, the release said.

The driver of the school bus, George R. Hoff, 46, of Joliet, was cited for disobeying a traffic control device (red light), the release said. Neither Hoff nor the van driver, Steve F. Depke, 53, of Chicago, were injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
