38 Hurt in School Bus Crash in Ohio
September 29, 1999

SOUTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio (AP) - A school bus carrying seventh-graders on a field trip flipped over on the side of a rural highway on Wednesday, injuring 38 students.

The bus apparently slipped off the shoulder of the narrow two-lane road, and the driver overcorrected, Pickaway County Sheriff's Lt. J. Phillip Brown said.

Most of the injured students and the driver had bumps and bruises. One child with a shoulder injury was in fair condition.

Superintendent Ron Thornton said the students were on an annual field trip to the Ohio Renaissance Festival.

``We feel very fortunate that it wasn't worse,'' he said. ``Thank God for that.''

In Columbus, a bus carrying elementary school students was hit by a car turning in front of an oncoming truck. Six pupils on the bus and a driver in another vehicle were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

And in Minneapolis, two school buses crashed into each other Wednesday morning when one was traveling the wrong direction down a one-way street. The 17 children and three adults on the two buses were treated at a hospital and released.
