School Bus Hits
Dump Truck in New York
Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999
CENTRAL BRIDGE, N.Y. –– A bus transporting elementary school pupils on
a
Halloween-time field trip collided with a dump truck this morning,
injuring
dozens of youngsters, three critically.
The students were first- and second-graders at Albany school No. 118. They
were being taken to visit a pumpkin patch in Schoharie County, about 30
miles
west of Albany, when the crash happened shortly after 10:30 a.m., school
spokesman David Albert said.
Three critically injured students were airlifted by helicopter to the
Albany
Medical Center, he said.
At least 47 other people were taken to other hospitals in Albany and other
cities, authorities said. There were 44 pupils, plus teachers and parent
chaperones, on the bus, Albert said.
Albany school officials told parents to meet at a local school so they
could
be transported to whichever hospital their children were taken. Crisis
counseling teams were on hand.
