Revisits Seat Belt Issue Onboard School Buses
NASHVILLE, Tennessee
December 2005
The state
legislature here is looking into the possibility of requiring
three-point lap/shoulder seat belts on school buses.
A committee
was unanimously approved in both the House and Senate to study the issue
following a 2003 school bus crash which left a 7-year-old girl with a
serious brain injury. But a study was never performed.
WTVF-TV in
Nashville recently followed up and asked House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh why.
"As things
happened, this just happened to fall through the cracks," he told the
news station.
Naifeh has since appointed fellow democratic
Representatives Ben West, Phillip and Richard Montgomery, D-Sevierville.
There is also reportedly action being taken in the Senate.
