Kids Get Praise For Getting "Saved By The Belt"
Friday, January 13, 2006

Mecklenburg County EMS gave the students "Saved by the Belt" certificates and teddy bears as a reward for buckling up for safety.

More than a dozen preschoolers are getting special recognition for buckling up and surviving bus accident earlier this week.

The bus overturned on Old Concord Road Tuesday with 18 people inside, but the children on that bus avoided serious injury thanks to the use of seat belts.

Those students from Bethlehem Head Start School in north Charlotte took a break from learning to get that recognition Friday.

"A bear and a paper," student Gabriel Hyatt explained what he got at the ceremony.

Mecklenburg County EMS gave the students "Saved by the Belt" certificates and teddy bears as a reward for buckling up for safety. Hyatt recounted what happened on that bus ride.

"There was a log in the road," he explained. "My bus flipped over! I was screaming."

Those students were back in school only days after that accident because they took those safety precautions. Those safety restraints all worked Tuesday when the bus flipped onto its roof giving the students, parents and staff a scare. Those students hung upside-down in those harnesses until rescuers came onto the bus and freed them scared, but mostly unharmed.

The school said they have been getting a number of phone calls from parents who are interested in sending their students to the school because of these safety restraints they use on their buses.
