NATIONAL COALITION OF SCHOOL BUS SAFETY NEWS 2007
Driver Caution is Essential Around
School Buses
April 23, 2007
Re: School bus safety
With the recent school bus accident that
tragically killed a young boy, the important issue of school bus safety
is at the forefront. I am writing to remind drivers to pay attention and
obey the rules of the road.
One day last week, I once again had the
frightening experience of watching a car fail to stop for the stopped
bus with its lights flashing and stop sign extended. This time it was
one of our city's taxicabs.
This situation has unfortunately happened
about half a dozen times this school year.
The situation happens so quickly that the
bus driver, my neighbour and I are unable to get the licence plate of
the car involved. So there is no way of reporting it.
At the time, we are concerned for the
immediate safety of the children, so there isn't time to record vehicle
and driver information.
I hope this letter serves as a reminder
to motorists to pay attention and stop for school buses when they are
picking up and dropping off our children.
A delay of a few seconds, to wait, while
a child safely gets on the bus is far better than to take an innocent
young life.
