MLA Wants Bus Seatbelts
Apr 15 2007
Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth is
calling for seat belts on school buses after a 10-year-old Ontario
boy died in an accident during a field trip.
Farnworth said in a news release that
B.C. officials should closely monitor debate in Ontario about safety
requirements for school buses, and manufacturers and operators
should take more responsibility for student safety.
“Wednesday’s school bus accident in
Ontario is a wake-up call to governments across Canada about the
need to have our young students and other passengers in school buses
secured safely with seat belts,” said Farnworth, the MLA for Port
Coquitlam–Burke Mountain. “It’s time for the B.C. government to
examine the issue of school bus safety and move to require seat
belts for school bus passengers.”
Farnworth is the public safety critic
for the B.C. New Democratic party.
