New School Bus Seat Belts Ensure Safety For B-I-S-D Students
January 3, 2007

Students in the Beaumont Independent School District are a little safer tonight. B-I-S-D is the first in Texas to have what they call a Three- Point Seat Belt system on their school buses. Those are belts that cross over the shoulder with a lap belt. B-I-S-D is moving forward tonight after concerns about the West Brook High School bus crash in March of 2005. The accident killed two West Brook soccer players and injured twenty others when their charter bus overturned on the way to a game.

To ensure the safety of it`s students, B-I-S-D bought thirty new buses with seat belts they believe are the best made in the country. They are made to help keep students from being thrown out of their seats in the case of a crash. The buses also come with nine possible exits. The rear of the buses come with electronic message boards with LED lighting. There is also a strobe light at the top of the bus in the case of bad weather. B-I-S-D Director of Transportation says since the school district is doing away with charter buses, the new buses also needed to be comfortable. They have air conditioning and monitors to watch D-V-D`s.
