| Narrative
of Accident: |
|
| A child was
seriously injured Wednesday morning when a truck ran into the rear of a
school bus on Route 322 in Caernarvon Township.
Ten other children and the bus driver
suffered minor injuries in the 8:30 a.m. crash. All were expected to be
treated at Ephrata Community Hospital and released.
The child with the more serious injuries was taken to Lancaster General
Hospital and then transferred to Hershey Medical Center for further
treatment, a school official said.
The students were on a bus headed to Blue Ball Elementary School when
the accident happened. The collision occurred near the intersection of
Route 322 and Groff Lane, east of Blue Ball, in the village of Beartown.
The students, second- to sixth-graders, were checked for head and neck
injuries after the accident, said Eastern Lancaster County School
superintendent Robert Hollister.
Nine ambulances responded to the accident. Emergency workers took some
of the children off the bus on backboards after fitting them with neck
braces, said Hollister, who praised the emergency response.
Hollister also praised the school bus driver, Denise Wilimzig, 38, of
New Holland, for her quick actions during the accident.
The bus was stopped and a student was about to get on board when it was
hit from behind, the superintendent said.
"The driver heard the brakes of the truck and yelled for the kid to get
away," he said. "The kid would have been stepping on the bus at the
moment of impact. The bus driver's quick actions prevented some serious
injuries."
Wilimzig, who works for Brightbill Transportation, was thrown into the
steering wheel by the collision, Hollister said.
The driver of the box truck was James Rhoads, 73, of Reading, state
Trooper Nelson Renno said. The truck was from Tab Industries in Reading.
Rhoads was cited for careless driving after the collision, Renno said.
Hollister said the students stayed calm after the accident.
"It's a difficult situation," he said. "It's very scary when you start
to take kids out of the back of the bus."
Parents of injured students were notified, he said. Sixteen students on
the bus who were not injured continued to to school, where they were
checked by a school nurse. |

Narrative of Accident |
My daughter Lexi Worrell who is
handicapped (scoliosis) was put off at the wrong bus stop by a bus
driver who has a long list of endangering children (dragged a child
10 feet by the backpack etc.) previous to running over Lexi with the
rear wheels in front of our home. An agreement was made to put her
off in front of our home. The bus driver Curtis Wilson was 69 yrs
old at the time of the homicide. He had a heart attack the previous
year and was allowed to continue to drive. There were numerous
complaints to include parents filing complaints with the School
Board Superintendent Terry Holley and the Principle of the school
W.S. Harlan located in Lockhart Alabama. NOTHING was ever done to
the bus driver who was accused of speeding ,child endangerment,
backing the bus on a dirt road and sliding into a ditch. Too many
complaints to list. Our daughter was 8 years old. |

Narrative of Accident |
This past March I sent my son Joshua
Terrones in the bus, the special education route #1547. I decided to
check with Bonner Elementary(Houston Texas) to know if he had
arrived safely because of the bad weather. My son's teacher informed
me that the school bus had arrived, but that my son was not at the
school. As you can imagine I panicked. Apparently my son fell asleep
on the bus seat. When the bus got to the school the driver did not
check from the back to the front of the bus and he never realized
that my son was sleeping. I can not stop thinking of all the things
that could have happened with a negligent driver. I talked with the
school many times for assistant in the bus. I make meeting with the
ARD and nothing. My son is autistic and non-verbal. Please help my
son. |
